One of the most challenging aspects of being a truck driver is the amount of time you spend away from your family. As the holidays approach, truck drivers around the nation will be looking for ways to make it home for Christmas. Many, however, will spend the holidays parked in a truck stop or rest area across the country. Many will eat turkey dinner alone, maybe in a restaurant, or spend the day driving across the country to make the next pick-up or delivery.
If you find yourself on the road this holiday season you will want to find ways to make the most of it. Let’s take a look at five (plus one!) ways to cope with trucking during the holiday season.
Technology
Thanks to advances in technology seeing the faces of the ones you love is little more than a few clicks away. This Christmas, if you are one of the many drivers finding themselves away from home, be sure to connect with them. Having even a small amount of face-to-face time on screen can boost your spirits and bring joy to your heart. If you can’t have a video call, at least make a traditional call home.
Other Drivers
You’re not alone. You’ll find yourself in a parking lot with other drivers in the same situation. Sometimes family becomes the people you are spending time with. This season, don’t isolate yourself. Venture into the restaurants and diners to take part in the events often hosted by truck stops and various community groups that reach out to truckers during the Christmas season.
Meals
Indulging in a turkey dinner is standard fare for most over the holidays. It seems that every truck stop will be offering a turkey dinner at some point this season so take the stroll inside and eat up. Being surrounded by others who are going through a common experience draws people together. You don’t need to feel alone, and sharing a meal is a magical way to build relationships.
Decorate
You might not be at home but that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate. Lights, garlands, and even a miniature tree or other religious display can be set up right in your truck. Your truck and bunk are your home on the road so why not decorate like home? It will bring a smile to your face and to those around you.
Stay Active
Physical activity helps boost mood, clears your head, and contributes to your overall health. If you find yourself with downtime during the holidays but still away from home, take a walk, visit a gym, or practice stretches. Any activity is a good activity, so be active.
Wellbeing
On a serious note, the winter season, and particularly around Christmas, depression tends to rise. If you find yourself feeling depressed, alone, or even suicidal, reach out. Your well-being matters. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers 24/7 support for anyone in distress, providing prevention and crisis resources to you or your loved ones. Don’t hesitate to call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text 741741.
