So, you just got your CDL, now what? It’s time to start looking for trucking companies to work for. Finding the right trucking company can be overwhelming. It’s hard to determine which company is right for you, especially if you are new to the industry. Every truck driver has different wants and desires when it comes to working for a trucking company. It’s important to know what you want and do your research on what type of trucking companies there are before choosing a job. Check out our list of 6 things to consider when choosing a trucking company.
Reputation
Before choosing a company, spend time researching that company. Be sure to check out their website and social media platforms. You can learn a lot of information in a short amount of time by looking at their online presence. You can also read the reviews of the company. Not all reviews are trustworthy, but use your best judgement. If you know someone who has worked for a trucking company that you are interested in, reach out to them and ask them to tell you about their experience.
Type of Freight and Driving Style
As a truck driver, you might have a preference on driving style and what type of freight you want to haul.
First, you need to find out what type of freight the company hauls. Second, find out the company’s driving style. If you are not sure what your preference is, do some research and figure out which freight and driving style best suits you.
Pay and Benefits
Pay and benefits are a huge factor when it comes to choosing a trucking company. In fact, it may be the deciding factor. While some truckers may find that many trucking companies have similar pay rates, it’s important to dig deeper and find out the benefits a company offers. Ask the company about their retirement plan. Do they offer performance pay? What kind of insurance do they provide to their employees? Do they offer paid time off and if so, how much? Those are all questions you should ask a company before making a decision.
CDL Training Reimbursement
Trucking school is expensive and not every driver qualifies for truck driving school financing options. Some trucking companies offer to reimburse truck drivers for their CDL training. Finding a company that offers reimbursement would be a huge help to new truck drivers.

My friend needs to get stuff transported around for his business, but he doesn’t have the equipment necessary to do that. It makes sense that he might want to get a good trucking company! I’ll make sure he knows to find one that has a good reputation so he can bank on them being punctual.
Very good article. I’m experiencing many of these issues as well..
